Geography

Choose a country to research as part of our class geography challenge! You will take notes on what you have learned and then use those notes to build web pages on the country you have researched. Countries that have been researched by fifth graders in years past have been marked not available.

Ten Steps in the Process:

  1. Choose a country to research that no one else is studying from the lists below.
  2. Research that country using the links provided and whatever other reliable print or online sources you can find. You could also interview an adult who knows about the country you have chosen to study!
  3. Take notes on what you have learned.
  4. When your notes are finished, share them with your teacher (turn them in).
  5. Use your notes to write informational paragraphs about your country on the Google Document provided. You will have more than one paragraph for each page of notes.
  6. Share your writing with your teacher.
  7. Website Challenge: Use the Google Sites template provided by your teachers to build web pages on your country. You will have 7 pages total:
    1. A Home page welcoming visitors to your site (build this page last)
    2. A Map page showing and telling where your country is located and what’s nearby
    3. A People page where you talk about the people who live there and their culture
    4. A Landforms page describing water and land formations in the country
    5. A Cities page describing major cities and the capital city
    6. A Climate and Resources page where you describe those aspects of the country
    7. A Bibliography page where you share with your visitors where to find out more
  8. Website evaluation: you will give feedback to other students who have studied countries on the same continent as the country you studied.
  9. Share your Sites with your teachers!
  10. Celebrate the publication of the newly published websites when they are complete!

Here are some links you can explore from the school Grade 5 website and a couple of others

  • Continents project research links can be found on the useful links Grade 5 page.

This will be a first come, first to choose in terms of country selection this year. That may limit you to 150 choices, but I guarantee you will learn something new!  It would be great if we could have a variety of students studying each continent so take a look at what others have done and let’s see if we can learn about countries on each continent.

I have created a document for each student for note taking. I have created a slide showing how the websites will be evaluated once they are finished.

This is a long term project that is designed to take us through May 4, the intended date of the school’s reopening.
